Wearing armour will be after the completion of the beginner course and at the discretion of the instructors, based on how well you can demonstrate the fundamental cuts and drills.
Does it hurt to get struck?

Whilst wearing the armour does provide protection, the feeling of being struck with correct technique is akin to being slapped across the thigh. There are additional protectors that can be worn if the practitioner wishes.
